Library Project in Mielec

Urban Planning Concept.

The Workers’ Housing Estate, built in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, is a bold urban development that the people of Mielec can be proud of. Particularly noteworthy is the cultural-sport-recreational axis, realized on a scale unprecedented in Poland at the time, created during the period of the Central Industrial Region (COP) and socialist realism. This element is too weakly rooted in the consciousness of the residents and needs to be popularized. The land development project focuses on emphasizing this axis and creating a three-part park.

Architectural Concept

The proposed expansion of the city library strongly refers to the history of the site: the Workers’ Housing Estate, built for the residents – by the residents. Brick becomes an architectural expression, referencing the material hidden beneath the plaster layers of the surrounding buildings. By varying its arrangement, an interesting sculptural façade can be achieved. One of the main architectural principles is to create perforated walls formed by the strategic placement of bricks. The designed building opens up to the park and surrounding buildings, with the perforated walls serving as both light and view-enhancing elements.
